No. 2 Pitt Narrowly Avoids Upset At Hands Of Rutgers

Jan 30, 2011 8:57 AM

No. 2 Pittsburgh overcame a rough shooting night to beat Rutgers 65-62 and avoid a second-straight upset loss.

Ashton Gibbs scored 22 points for the Panthers, who got 12 of their last 15 points from the foul line.

"I liked how we made plays down the end, especially the free throws," coach Jamie Dixon said. "We did what we wanted to do assignment-wise and defensively. We finished the game in a good way. They defended well, we defended well, but at end of game we made our free throws, took care of the ball and rebounded, things that we wanted to do."

Pitt has now won 20 or more games in 10 straight seasons.

No. 22 Georgetown Ends Three-Game Skid

Jan 15, 2011 8:07 PM

No. 22 Georgetown ended a three-game losing streak with their victory over Rutgers on Saturday afternoon.

Austin Freeman, Chris Wright and Jason Clark bounced back from a slump to score 53 points in the Hoyas' 74-65 win.

“It’s really good to have these guys back,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. “If we could have won and they still be in their shooting slump, I would take that. But we need these guys to play well for us. That’s not to say we don’t have other options, but we went through a stretch where they were all out of sync."

Rutgers Benches Starters In Second Half Of Loss

Jan 12, 2011 3:39 PM

Upset over his team's effort in the second half, Rutgers coach Mike Rice benched starters and refused to call timeouts in their loss to UConn on Tuesday night.

"Maybe now we can compete and play 40 minutes for every single possession," Rice said after the game. "Because they certainly didn’t do it."

Rutgers lost 67-53 to No. 10 Connecticut after a close first half.
